Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos today welcomed the launch of the first three of 43 new VLocity railcars ordered for V/Line with an investment by the Victorian Coalition Government at a cost of $227 million.
Mr Katos said that the train had been delivered on time, and would begin taking passengers today.
Mr Katos said that with four million passenger trips now made annually on the Geelong line and the recent opening of Waurn Ponds railway station, it was more important than ever that V/Line had new rollingstock.
“The April 2015 ahead of time opening of the $900 million under budget Regional Rail Link through Wyndham Vale will give Geelong line trains a clear run to and from Southern Cross without any delays from Metro suburban trains, but it also means that V/Line needs more rollingstock,” Mr Katos said.
Mr Katos said that each new three car railcar set would seat 228 passengers in airconditioned comfort.
“Due to the Coalition’s careful financial management, Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder was able to increase the order from 40 to 43 railcars.
This is great news for Geelong, one of the lines on which the new railcars will operate, and great news for country Victorians and V/Line,” Mr Katos said.
