As the Shadow Minister for Geelong and the Member for South Barwon with a strong link to local sporting clubs, I am pleased that I have been able to assist with saving our regions sporting club from a huge land tax slug.
Daniel Andrew’s labor government recently attempted to narrow the exemption that protects tennis, bowls, golf, footy and netball clubs across Victoria from being slugged land tax.
Under Labor’s proposed changes, the land tax exemption would only apply to land used “exclusively” for sporting purposes.
Such a change would have seen sports clubhouses – which often host non-sporting functions such as 21st birthdays, wedding receptions and conferences – subject to land tax for the first time.
Forcing sporting clubs to pay land tax on clubhouses would have a devastating financial effect. For many clubs, they would face closure.
Fortunately, the Liberals and Nationals stood up to protect community sport and we were successful in defeating this attack.
I am proud to support our all our local sporting clubs right across our region.
In defeating Daniel Andrews’ tax grab, I was pleased to stand up for grassroots sport against a Labor government more interested in hiking taxes than in fostering community sport.
