Today, Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos MP and Liberal Candidate for Geelong, Freya Fidge announced that if elected to Government in November, the Liberal Party would commit $200,000 to assist with installation of 100 lux lights at Queens Park helping the Geelong Amateurs Football Club continue to play and grow.
“These lights will help the 2nd largest club in the Barwon Region – something that is long overdue.”
The installation of 100 lux lights would ensure training and matches can occur, especially on Friday nights and in the evenings in winter.
Mr Katos noted that given the status of poor lighting of the ovals, there is a difficult environment for training – especially in the winter months, and may lead to match cancellations.
“Daniel Andrews has given $225 million away to the AFL but ignores our local clubs when they are crying out for funding.
Having these lights will ensure that all age groups can play and train on the ground safely
At the announcement, Mr Katos acknowledged the club’s success and noted that the club is going from strength to strength, with considerable growth in female participation and in player numbers from the new housing estates in the Highton Hills.
Mr Katos congratulated the club on having the largest Auskick Centre in the region, which provided the first allgirls Auskick program in 2016 and 3 additional Junior Girls football teams in 2017.
Geelong Amateurs currently provides more than 760 football and 230 netball participants and their families on a weekly basis – and is set to continue to grow.
“As the local Member of Parliament, I am proud to be continually fighting for our grassroots sporting clubs – and will continue to deliver for them.”
